Next Project - Van's RV-9A

I'd started building an RV-9A in 2007, but because of other obligations, I've shelved the full-scale project indefinitely.  Still, I wanted to build an RV-9A!  I decided to build a large-scale R/C model of the RV.   For more info on the RV-9/9A, see www.vansaircraft.com  For more information on MY RV-9A, see http://websites.expercraft.com/scottydog1/?q=home

There are other RV arf's available by Great Planes, and KMP, and probably some plans, but I decided to draw my own design, and build it myself.  I started with factory outline drawings - and my preview plans set for the full-scale plane.  I drew new structure for the RC model on the scale outlines.....

These are the drawings as they appeared and after I "touched them up" a bit on CorelDraw.  This is the color scheme I chose not only for my model, but for my full-scale RV-9A.  Below, you can see my finished plans.... or at least as finished as I'm going to get them! :-)

OK - first things first - Size..... I like 'em large.  So 10' sounded like a good size.  If I can keep it under 20 lbs.,  I figure it'll fly with an E-Flite 160 outrunner.... but I've blown it on this before..... I really have a hard time believing I can keep it that light, but I'll try!!! :-)

The wheel pants are from a GP matt chapman 580, and the nose wheel pant from a GP Extra.  I'll attempt to vacuum-form the massive canopy, and mold the cowling and wingtips from fiberglass.  The rest will be built-up balsa and lite-ply.

I decided to start on the tail..... and here's my example - my full-scale RV-9A Empennage!  Finished and nowhere to go.... :-(  Anyway, it'll help build a model!

Here's the print of my drawing done on my inkjet large-format sign printing equipment.  This plan is printed on self-adhesive vinyl, so I can cut out the parts, stick them to wood, and cut them out on the saw.....!

The Vertical Stab and Rudder are taking shape... rough-sanded, and looking....... BIG! :-)

The Horizontal Stab being framed up, sheeted, and, of course, test-fitted!  On to the Elevators.....

Here's the completed Empennage...... Now, waiting for some large plywood to show up, and I'll start in on the wings and fuselage!

CHECK BACK SOON for more progress!
